The Blade is a part of the Kaimai Mamaku State Forest Park, where the Friends of the Blade protect the bush and birds by pest eradication. We are controlling exotic pests, possums, rats and mustelids in over 100 Ha of the Park, and are now expanding into a further 20 Ha. We have been successful with getting most of the funds to enable this, but we are in need of more volunteers to man further trap lines.
Although we usually go in as a group to check traps on Fridays, others do their lines on weekends. We can train up volunteers then they can handle their assigned lines at any time.
What is involved? The lines are marked and cleared for you. The terrain is interesting, but not too challenging. A reasonable level of fitness is required, with suitable footwear. The anticoagulant is rodent-specific and is safe when handled with the provided gloves. High vis vests, gloves and traps are all provided. It takes average ability and two to three hours to complete the work there. Current volunteers are aged from 10 (as part of a family team) to 78, of all abilities.
